WHY AM I AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

Growing up, my mother had every interior design and fashion magazine possible around the house. I spent countless hours perusing through these periodicals. Little did I know then, that I was absorbing furniture and accessory placement, color synthesis, texture, line and how they all came together to form a unified and fabulous look. My mother never was able to pursue interior design on a professional basis, but spent many days, with me by her side, arranging, rearranging, adding, and subtracting components in the rooms in her home. I observed and observed.

My reason for studying design arose from this constant curiosity about the integrative process that occurs between human-made objects, our natural surroundings, and the needs of each individual. When outdoors, I often found myself searching for the unifying factor(s) within a group of visual items, especially when the image involved contrasting elements. Immediately, my mind would be filled with questions. What “caught my attention” in this grouping ? What were the unifying variable(s)? Did the parts relate in a unified manner even if discord was present? Was discord or interruption used as emphasis? These were some of the questions that filled my mind when encountering a visual experience.

My interior design work is a reflection of the importance of integrating elements within a designed environment, and the importance of creating a unified space that also functions to meet the personal needs of each client. We are all strongly affected by our surroundings whether we are aware of it or not. I believe the success of each designed space is important because it strongly affects one’s happiness, productivity, and sense of fulfillment.
